I’ve lived on the outskirts of L.A. my whole life, but I officially moved to the city to attend a private liberal arts college and earn my degree. Oddly enough, not only did I double major in Women’s and Gender Studies and English and Comparative Literary Studies, but I would eventually end up with an M.R.S. degree as well.
After hastily securing an off-campus shared apartment in South Pasadena with other students in the area, I commuted to Eagle Rock to attend the first day of orientation. Here, I attended a lengthy lecture on the hallowed halls of the school and the deep roots the school held not only in advancing the surrounding community, but in the world as well. I also learned that the school enjoyed a high rate of matchmaking success, too, news that I scoffed at given that dating in general was never something I was very good at.
Soon after the lecture us students were split up and sent off into groups to make friends and build bonds. It was there, playing silly games like “Two Truths and a Lie,” that I met the man that would become my future husband.

At first, we just seemed to get thrown together for group activities: line dancing out of sync, going to movies in the same car, etc. Then I realized that we were becoming friends, seeking each other out and hanging out on our own after the rest of the group had left. When I told my girlfriends at home that I had a new “guy friend,” they laughed and said he was totally into me. I didn’t believe them at first, but eventually I caught on to the truth of the matter.
Our official “DTR” moment came after we made a bet, a kind of truth or dare based around where the movie “Orange County” was filmed. I contended that it was filmed at our school , in Eagle Rock, not at Stanford in Northern California, where it takes place. He said that I was way off and it might not be Stanford, but it wasn’t our school either. In the end, he lost the bet and ended up having to confess his feelings for me. After that, we were inseparable.
Once we graduated, we moved in together in a cozy apartment in the Eagle Rock neighborhood we had both grown to love. And just last year, we made things official by tying the knot.
