That’s right. The possibility of all Los Angeles residents having access to free Wi-Fi is closer than you think. It’s a proposal put into place by City Councilman Bob Blumenfield who hopes to provide all residents of Los Angeles with free and unlimited access to the internet. Here’s his Statement:
“Free and universal public access to WiFi is another critical component of a modern, accessible government. Expanding access to WiFi will benefit our City in numerous ways, from helping to close the digital divide for students to reducing start-up costs for new businesses.”
Los Angeles would be the largest city to provide free Wi-Fi, alongside San Jose, Houston and Minneapolis. I suppose that this is exciting news for those who don’t own personal hot spots or have internet at home, but the challenge now is figuring out how to make this work logistically.
I don’t know about you guys, but given the security issues we’ve encountered over the past year, I’m a little paranoid to log on to massive networks. There’s something about it that screams come hither hackers. And, what about the broadband service providers that already exist? So many things to consider with this one, but it looks like we should know whether or not the city will green light the plan by November.
How long do you think it will be before the internet will be considered a basic civil right? As L.A. goes, so goes the rest of the country and I’ve got hunch that it won’t be long. What are your thoughts?
